Physics AP Policy

Students with AP grades of 3 or lower receive no credit or placement.

There is a college wide policy that a student may not receive credit toward a degree solely on the basis of a score on an Advanced Placement Test. Students with scores of 4 or 5 may receive one or more credits upon passing a Hamilton physics course. Information about the amount of credit and the appropriate course placement will be found below. The award of credit is separate from placement, that is, from deciding whether you can skip a lower level Hamilton physics course and go straight into a higher level course. The list below indicates some possible placements. We strongly recommend that you talk to the physics department chair to determine a starting point appropriate for your own background. As you plan your first year of studies, be aware that courses 100, 200, 190, and 290 are all taught only in the fall; 105, 195, 205, and 295 are taught in the spring.

Physics B (non-calculus):

Students having obtained a 4 in AP Physics B will receive 1 credit upon successful completion of Physics 100 (algebra-based) or Physics 190 (calculus-based physics for first year students) or Physics 200 (calculus-based physics for post-first year students majoring in science or mathematics). Another Physics course may be substituted for 100 or 190 or 200 with permission of the department chair. Students having obtained a 5 in AP Physics will receive 1 credit upon successful completion of a Physics course and should consult with the department about placement. Minimum grade of B- required.

Physics C (calculus based):

Mechanics only: Students having obtained a 4 in AP Mechanics will receive 1 credit upon successful completion of Physics 190 or 200. Students having obtained a 5 in AP Physics C will receive 1 credit upon successful completion of any physics course and should consult with the department about placement. Minimum grade of B- required.

E&M only: Students having obtained a 4 in AP E&M will receive 1 credit upon successful completion of Physics 195. Students having obtained a 5 in AP Physics C will receive 1 credit upon successful completion of a Physics course. Minimum grade of B- required.

Both Mechanics and E&M: Students having obtained a 4 in both Mechanics and E&M will receive 2 credits upon successful completion of Physics 290 and should consult with the department chair about placement. Students having obtained a 4 and 5 in Mechanics and E&M will receive 1 credit upon successful completion of a Physics course and another upon successful completion of Physics 290. Students having obtained a 5 in both Mechanics and E&M will receive 2 credits upon successful completion of a Physics course (starting with 290 is recommended). Minimum grade of B- required.
