Dissertation Title: Phase Matching and Coherence of High-Order Harmonic Generation in Hollow Waveguides

Research:

For my dissertation research, I studied high-order harmonic generation, an extreme nonlinear optical process by which light is upconverted from the visible/near-IR to the extreme ultraviolet and soft x-ray regions of the spectrum. This short wavelength light is also coherent and ultrafast, down to pulse durations of hundreds of attoseconds. This type of radiation is of high interest to researchers studying matter at the smallest time- and length scales. Specifically, my research investigated ways of improving the conversion efficiency of this harmonic generation through novel phase matching techniques.
