Introduction

Welcome to Physics 105, a continuation of 100. This class meets MWF at 9 am , and class attendance is important/essential. I expect that we will all be here for every class meeting. We will try to cover most of the rest of your 100 text. We do almost a chapter a week; it’s a fast pace and I am determined to keep on schedule.  The subject material is challenging and (I hope you’ll agree) interesting.  We spend lots of time of electricity and magnetism, then move on to optics and finally, during the last month, we study the amazing physics of the 20th century – Special Relativity and Quantum Mechanics.  That’s the best part.

Texts:

Physics 6 th Edition - same book that you used last semester
Giancoli
Published by Prentice Hall

You will also need a laboratory notebook that you should bring to every lab. This must be a bound notebook. You will need it for the first lab this week.

Grading

There will be weekly homework assignments - "problem sets" - in most weeks that do not also include an exam. There will be weekly laboratories that will be written up in your lab notebooks and the lab notebooks will be graded. The complete course grade will be divided between all the activities according to the following formula:

    Running Total
Problem Sets 15% 15%
Quizzes 5% 20%
Labs 20%

40%

Midterms (2) 30% 70%
Final Exam 30% 100%

LAB:

Lab meets from 1-4 on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (starting this week).  There are 12 labs, so we’ll have two extra weeks to take exams.

Grades for individual labs will depend on your participation during lab period and on your lab notebook. Detailed information about how your lab work is assessed and graded will be explained this week in lab.  Professors Major and Schreve are the lab instructors this semester. If you have to miss a lab because of illness or a scheduled college activity, Please let one of them know ahead of time so we can reschedule.

HOMEWORK:

You will receive an assignment of roughly a dozen problems every week.  Your solutions to the problems will be collected and written solutions will be posted on Blackboard. Your work will be graded and returned. For the sake of the grader (and for fairness) late HW is strongly discouraged and will be penalized: -20%/day starting the first day. I will drop your lowest HW score when compiling final grades. Homework will normally be due Wednesdays at the beginning of class. Office hours are scheduled to coordinate with the HW due date:

OFFICE HOURS
MONDAY         2-4pm
TUESDAY         3-5pm *Professor Schreve will be available after 4pm some weeks.
FRIDAY            2-3pm

Try to make your HW neat and easy to read. Show your work! We can’t give you any credit for correct answers if you give no justification. Underline or highlight your final answer so the grader can find it. Always remember to include units.

*You are encouraged to discuss the homework problems in general terms with other members of this class, BUT PLEASE HAND IN WORK THAT REFLECTS YOUR OWN UNDERSTANDING.

QUIZZES

We will have two quizzes this semester on Fridays – see schedule. They are scheduled roughly midway between midterm exams. They will be based on homework problems and/or class notes.

EXAMS

Two midterm exams are scheduled for the 5th and 10th weeks of the semesters.  They will be given during lab periods.  The final exam will be cumulative and is scheduled for Tuesday morning of exam week.
