Physics 105 Homework

Final HW - #14

An image of an image taken with a camera and a concave mirror. Some rather severe spherical aberration is apparent, but the image of the camera near the center of the mirror is quite good.

A very thin film of soapy water reflecting light from a large white light source. The light reflected off the back of the film interferes with the light reflected off the front of the film. Depending on the thickness of the film different colors are seen in a repeating pattern of yellow, magenta, cyan, yellow, magenta, cyan, etc.

thin film art

Perhaps you have seen this remarkable artwork over by Wellin Hall. A white light is being shone through various pieces of glass that are actually made up of two pieces of glass with an interference filter in between. The filter works because of thin-film interference. For example the filter shown on the close-up has a film thickness such than no reddish-orange light is reflected. Thus, this color is transmitted. On the other hand the film thickness is such that green and blue light are reflected, so there is little transmission of these colors.

Below is a close-up of the pane of glass right in the middle that is transmitting red light. Notice the sandwich made up of two panes of glass with a thin film in between.
